Donations down at nearly half of Colorado churches, study finds

Colorado church leaders have been feeling the financial pinch. Now they have a study to back it up.

The recession has  drastically affected giving to U.S. churches in 2009, a new study finds.

A survey called State of the Plate, sponsored by Christianity Today International (CTI) and Maximum Generosity in Colorado Springs, found that 38 percent of U.S. churches in 2009 experienced a drop in donations compared with the previous year.

Giving dropped even more in the Rocky Mountain states (Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho), with 48 percent of churches reporting a decrease in donations.

Meanwhile, 47 percent of U.S. megachurches, those with more than 2,000 weekly attendees,  reported a drop in donations, the survey found.

“State of the Plate” surveyed 1,017 churches by email in February and March 2010. The churches were mostly Protestant, with some Catholic and Orthodox churches thrown in to the mix.

The survey did not seek to learn how much giving had dropped. However, CTI’s survey a year ago of 1,168 churches found that giving was down 2 percent or more in 2008 when compared to the previous year. That survey also found that 29 percent of U.S. churches reported a drop in giving.

Gee, took a LOT of brain power to figure out that when the economy is in trouble, donations of ANY kind are going to go down! Not just in churches, like this writer would like everyone to believe. What a waste of story space.

  • ManitouMoM says:

Um, no Bobby. As former sheeples will testify, they no longer wish their hard-earned $$$ to support organizations like FOTF or churches like NLC. They are tired of the hate, tired of the divisiveness, tired of the false teachings of so-called evangelical “Christians.”

The tide has turned, Bobby, and folks like you are a dying breed.

I would love for Manitoumom to actually visit New Life – she would be shocked to find no hate, divisiveness or false teachings. Come on Manitoumom, you can sit with me. Just one Sunday, please.

  • DanaRambley says:

It is people like manitouMOM that I feel very sorry for. Why would anybody act and believe the lies she has written here. The hate is strong in this one, and mom needs to be prayed for. I do think a visit to new life would be good for people like MOM. But you will never see it because they only want to deal with their world of hatred instead of the great things God could bring them.

Bobby R. says: “when the economy is in trouble, donations of ANY kind are going to go down! Not just in churches, like this writer would like everyone to believe”

However, the blog post clearly states: “The recession has drastically affected giving to U.S. churches in 2009, a new study finds.”

The eyes see what they want to see. Bobby, I think you’re looking a bit too hard for bias here. The economic cause is acknowledged.

  • DebbyRost says:

Bill, I believe that is what Bobby was saying. This story is dumb. It is like saying apples are sweet because they grow that way. Duh.

manitouMOM calls childish names (sheeples) but then calls Christians hateful? Hello loopy lou! And Christians knew that people claiming to be Christians but not living the actual Christian lifestyle would be trimmed away and culled out of the true church. Please try to look beyond your own strange hatred of Christians before saying that we are the ones who hate.

  • ManitouMOM says:

For those who invited me to NLC, thanks but no thanks. I find your “prosperity theology” abhorrent, and I know God does, too. “Church planting,” is another cockamamie, false theology that you and your ilk follow. Hey, you want to tithe YOUR hard-earned money to a false church, go right ahead. I’ll stick with MY religion (and no, I’m not telling you where I worship. I’ve already had one of your ilk stalk me [manitouMON] and will not go through that again).

  • DebbyRost says:

ManitouMOM, I see much hatred in your words. Just wondering, how do you know what God finds abhorrent? What exactly is your “religion”? You do not have to mention your building of worship, but your words seem to have so much anger in them. And seeing you write on stories that deal specifically with the Christian church shows a lot about how far away from the one true God you really are. I would certainly bet you have never even attended a New Life service, and have no idea what you are talking about.

  • Bobdavies says:

Debby, hate like that cannot be helped easily. Just pray for manitouMOM and that is all you can do. I too am surprised that this paper allows people like her to write such things here.

  • MandaG says:

Is this the most stupid story EVER or what? Look at the economy! EVERYTHING is down!
